New Jersey Sandwich Chain opens Queens’ first store in Forest Hills

FOREST HILLS, QUEENS — A New Jersey sandwich chain opened its first Queens outpost in Forest Hills this week.

Jersey Mike’s Subs, a chain that started in a coastal New Jersey town and has since grown to nearly 2,000 locations nationally (and internationally), opened its first-ever Queens outpost on Wednesday. on Continental Avenue near Austin Street, a store employee confirmed with Patch.

The Forest Hills store has drawn mixed reactions from neighbours, many of whom have been anticipating its opening since last year when a sign was first put up on the store front.

Some were overjoyed, taking to Facebook to post pictures of inside the store and the queue, and sharing reviews of the sandwiches (which would taste good, but could have done with a bit more meat , according to a neighbor).

Others, however, said they would rather shop at a beloved local sandwich shop or nearby deli than at a chain store – criticism has been raised among neighbors since news of the store broke.

“I’m going to get a sandwich from a local grocery store. We’re lucky we still have some, rather than resorting to a chain like this or Subway,” a neighbor wrote.

Another, however, applauded that Jersey Mike’s is not like other chains.

“The business is amazing and gives so much. I always go to my local deli as well as this one,” one wrote, highlighting Jersey Mike’s humble beginnings and history of charitable giving. “It has nothing to do with Subway,” the person added.

Jersey Mike’s dates back to 1971, when CEO Peter Cancro (then 14) got a job at Mike’s Subs, a sandwich shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey.

Three years later, at age 17, Cancro purchased the sub-store after its longtime owners retired, and gave up his dreams of law school and football to run the sandwich shop, which he started franchising in 1978.

The Forest Hills outpost, located at 107-12 Continental Avenue, replaces a Starbucks, which left the space in 2019 to open nearby, at the corner of Queens Boulevard and 71st Avenue.

Its opening comes shortly before the chain’s “Day of Giving” on March 30, when the Queens outpost – alongside 53 other stores in New York and hundreds nationwide – will donate all sales to Special Olympics USA 2022.

Jersey Mike’s Forest Hills is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, according to the website.
