NY Jets QB Zach Wilson dons custom Mets jersey at Citi Field

Keith Hernandez was disappointed to find out Wilson might not ‘like the Mook’

Thursday afternoon’s New York Mets game provided perhaps the most comedic case of mistaken identity related to Keith Hernandez as a certain mailman sarcastically wished him a “good game.”

The humorous incident involved New York Jets franchise quarterback Zach Wilson, who thankfully was not the victim of a “magic loogie.” Wilson was on hand in Queens to witness the Mets’ dramatic 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, a victory earned thanks to Pete Alonso’s two-run home run in the 10th overtime. The quarterback’s prescience was noted early in the action by the Mets’ flagship television network, SNY.

After joking that Wilson probably wouldn’t take an interview with field reporter Steve Gelbs (the host of SNY’s in-season Jets coverage on Sunday), Hernandez was thrilled to see the Mets’ replica home jersey at the quarterback’s white stripes bore the surname Wilson. An enthusiastic Hernandez felt like Wilson was replacing a former teammate and World Series champion.

“Oh! He loves The Mook! Hernandez says, referring to famed Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson.

Choking laughter, Hernandez’s pit partner and longtime Mets play-by-play man Gary Cohen reminds him that “either that or that’s his own name.” Hernandez, mischievous and pissed off, remarks that he couldn’t see the number on Wilson’s garment, that number presumably being the No. 2 he represents with the Jets (and worn by Dominic Smith on the current Mets roster) .

As Jets OTAs loom, Wilson took advantage of his final days away from football to check out some of the tri-state area’s alternative sports offerings. He and wide receiver Braxton Berrios were previously in attendance at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night to watch the New York Rangers 4-3 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs .

The current NL East leaders Mets return to play Friday night in Denver against the Colorado Rockies (8:40 p.m. ET, SNY).
